2013 Brunello di Montalcino

On February 1, 2018, Benvenuto Brunello arrived in Chicago, Il,  for a preview of the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino.  30 producers from Montalcino  showcased their wines in an afternoon of tasting.  Compared to the hot and dry 2012 vintage, 2013 was relatively cool and wetter.  Spring rains dominated the landscape.  Summer had some cool and hot streaks, but nothing major.  September weather was very good and left the grapes in good shape for harvest.  The cooler weather yielded refreshing acidity, more moderate alcohol levels, and  more fragrant wines. The 2013 vintage is being referred to as “Cool and Classic”.   I expect it to be as good or better than 2012.  Should be on the retail shelves and on wine lists in March 2018.

I will be attending the Benvenuto Brunello in Montalcino, February 16th – February 18th, and will have an updated post with more about the 2013 vintage at that time.   In addition to the release of the 2013 Brunello, the 2012 Riserva’s will also be released.
